About The Author
Much of the thinking in this book took place between sets — sitting on a surfboard, waiting,
watching the water rearrange itself before the next set of waves arrives.
The author is a long-time surfer, and many of his habits of attention were shaped not in
classrooms or studios, but in moments of pause, uncertainty, and misreading out at sea.
He writes from experience rather than instruction, interested less in answers than in
what happens when one stays with a question long enough for it to change.
This book reflects that posture: attentive, provisional, and unhurried.
Between Sets is a collection of short reflections shaped by attention rather than conclusion.
Written across moments of waiting, uncertainty, and return, these pieces stay close
to experience as it unfolds—without rushing to explain it or turn it into answers.
Moving between observation, questioning, and release, the book invites the reader to
slow down and look more carefully at how meaning forms when certainty is refused.
These are not lessons or arguments or stories about surfing, but inquiries—held lightly,
and left open. It is between sets that the surfer gets the opportunity to breathe,
to recover and to contemplate.
